CIL 14, 00314
Meiggs 1997: 211; D'Arms 1976: 397-398; Royden 1988: 75, no. 26
Parthenopaeus is the only equestian among the officers of the fabri tignuarii. D'Arms (loc. cit.) suggests therefore that the quinquennalitas was honourary.
Given his equestrian status and membership of the city-council Parthenopaeus should be freeborn. His Greek name, however, suggests a freedman social environment. So does the fact that his wife has the same nomen. Meiggs plausibly suggests (loc. cit.) that Parthenopeus married his own freedwomen or one of his family. D'Arms (loc. cit.) argues he was a freedman nonetheless and received a legal exception thanks to his patron's influence.
