CIL 14, 02630 ; AE 1941, 00071

Royden 1988: 157-159, no. 183 ; Tran 2006: 167-168, 339, 381
Dessau (ad CIL 14, 02630) mistakenly attributed the inscription to Ostia. He was followed in this by Meiggs 1973: 319. See Royden and Tran for the correction

Probably the freedman of an imperial freedman of Vespasian or one of his sons. He might also have been freed before Vespasian became emperor, but it seems unlikely he would not have mentioned the connection in that case.

He was married to Claudia Prisca, Tib. f, presumably the daughter of an imperial freedman of Nero.

CIL 14, 02630 supplies Hilario's career:
  1. decur(ioni) coll(egii) fabr(um) ex lustro XV (since 64 CE)
  2. n<o=U>ngento ad su<f=B>frag(ia) lustro XVI (69-73 CE)
  3. mag(istro) quinq(uennali) coll(egii) fabr(um) tignarior(um) lustro XVII (74-78 CE)
  4. honorat(o) ex lustro XIIX (since 79 CE)
  5. censor(i) bis ad mag(istro) creando lust(ro) XIX et XX (84-93 CE)
  6. iudexs inter elect(os) XII ab ordine lust(ro) XXII (since 94 CE)

His name is partially preserved in line 51 of AE 1941, 00017 (fasti of the guild's magistri quinauennales) for the 17th lustrum (74-78 CE: T(itus) Fl[avius T(iti) l(ibertus) Hilario]. He was, however, excused before the end of his term (ll.57-58: in loc(o) Fl[avi T(iti) l(iberti) Hilarionis] / excusa[ti]). It isn't clear whether this was an honour or merely reflected a (temporary?) incapacity to fulfill his duties.
